BMD Board of Directors

Meet the BMD Planning Team

The Festival Coordinator along with our BMD Board of Directors work year-round to produce Cottage Grove's largest event of the year.

 board2017

Cindy Weeldreyer | Festival Coordinator

Before joining the board in 2012, for eight years Cindy wore several hats assisting Festival Coordinator Sharon Jean, primarily as publicity coordinator, website content coordinator and as an official BMD Ambassador. Prior to becoming the Festival Coordinator in 2015, Cindy served as Board Secretary, Kiddie Parade Coordinator and as a member of the Website Design Team.

How long have you been a Grover? I moved to Lane County in 1980 to attend the University of Oregon.  In 1983, my husband Ralph and I moved to Cottage Grove to better care for his elderly mother and their family’s property.

Occupation/Vocation: Community Journalist, Caregiver, Photographer/Videographer, Radio program host, Public Relations Specialist & Community Organizer, former Lane County Commissioner and LCC Board Member and BMD's Festival Coordinator

Other Grove Connections: CG Prospectors & Golddiggers, CG Historical Society, The Sentinel contributing writer, KNND Radio Host, T.E.A.M Cottage Grove, Around The Grove weekly community newsletter editor, Lane Community College-Cottage Grove Advisory Board, Friends of the Cottage Grove Carousel Project and the CG Vision 2037 Project

Why did you join the BMD Board? I *love* BMD! I got involved as an organizer because I wanted to be part of continuing one of Oregon's oldest community festivals for future generations to enjoy. In addition to being Cottage Grove’s biggest party of the year, I love how the festival strengthens community cohesiveness and makes a positive economic impact in town for four days each summer.

How many years did you serve on the BMD Board? Four years, from 2012-2015.

What is your favorite BMD event/memory? My favorite event is the Historical Treasure Hunt on our "time traveling train" (with The Slabtown vs. Lemati Feud as a close second). My favorite BMD memory is my very first one – in 1980. That year the festival was held next to the fire station on the old Chambers Mill property. Ralph Weeldreyer, my new boyfriend and native Grover, took this Louisiana Bayou girl for a romantic spin on the Carnival’s Ferris wheel and then took me to my first Lemati Gang’s Old West Show. I’m thankful to the thousands of volunteers who've kept this festival going for 50+ years.

Cathy Simmons | President / Vendor Coordinator

Cathy joined the BMD Board in 2012. She served as Secretary/treasurer for 3 years before becoming Persident in 2017. She is also our festival's Vendor Coordinator. "I love Bohemia Mining Days" she says. "It's a ton of work but it's all worth it when I see so many people having so much fun. We are really looking forward to the festival's 60th anniversary next year".

How long have you been a Grover?
Since September of 2005 and I've gone to the festival every year. I love it! I was raised just 20 miles south of Cottage Grove in a small town, so Cottage Grove is just my size. Not too big, but not too small.

Occupation/Vocation:
Application Administrator. Jobs titles aren't always the best description of what one does every day. In a nut-shell, I write reports for a Health Insurance company. I love what I do and I've been doing it since 1986.

Other Grove Connections:
I sometimes volunteer at 'Sunday Soup Kitchen' (know as 'Soups On') on Sunday's, where we feed community members that need a little extra help. I'm a proud member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I also was a member of the Ford Institute Leadership Program in 2015. We put in those cute Little Free Libraries around town.

Why did you join the BMD Board?
I was looking to fill my life with healthy, community involved, fun activities. I Love this event and was hoping to bring to the table, if not just a smile, then lots of hard work. When Sharon Jean approached me, I jumped at the chance to serve the community by helping out such an amazing fun event.

How many years have you served on the BMD Board?
This will be my 7th Festival as a board member and l am very excited about all the new things we are bringing this year. My position of Treasurer brought me a ton of insight as to what it takes to put this Festival together. I have the upmost respect for each board member I work with. They each give so much of their time, their family's time, and some wonderful skills to make sure this Festival is a succes each year.

What is your favorite BMD event/memory?
I loved to sit and listen to the music. Sitting on one of those 2 big rocks out front is usually where you might have seen me...well maybe not these past few years. I'm pretty busy running around. Good news is, you can hear the music throughout the park. Can't wait for this year… I Love to dress in costume! See y’all there.
